Bundle Up (But Sizzle) This Winter 2008

by Suzie Sweet on September 23, 2008

Coats that sizzle - that’s what winter 2008 is all about. Designers are playing with fabric fit, flare, fold, and color in ways you never would have thought possible; and they’re coming up with coats you would never want to take off or stop wearing.

Collared Coats

Expect collars to look large and in charge and to come with excess fabric folded into interesting 3D configurations. These are coats that make serious fashion statements, what with materials that look like they have been intentionally sculpted. So when you’re wearing collared coats that pack in serious drama, keep the rest of your get-up simple. Forget elaborately cut dresses. A plain v-neck jersey dress or a satin floral frock will provide the perfect contrast. Dresses are no longer just for summer; they are now made to tide you over the cold months.

Cocoon Coats

Get curvy balance and perfect volume with a cocoon coat. Velvet or fur lining on the sleeves or the hemlines will make silhouettes appear even more interesting. Pyramid coats from the House of Dior are just the thing to score. If you don’t have the bucks for them, however, expand your options. Look onto other designers for trapeze pyramid shades with bulky sleeves.

Coats in Leather and Fur

Can you channel biker chic with leather and fur? Of course, and Marks & Spencer leads the way with their leather collection. The leather biker coat is one top trend that lets you wear a lifestyle slickly and sleekly.

When styling up this winter, take your cue from Paris and Milan. Mix and match. Wear eclectic blends. Play with charcoal, silver, lime green, and purple. Wear leather, plaids, and faux prints. Accessorize with stack rings, long, layered statement necklaces, cuff bracelets, faux handbags and belts, slouchy hobos or stylish satchels, and multi-faceted gemstones that catch the light.

Winter may be the coldest of seasons but with eye-popping hues and vibrant designs to keep you warm, who says winter will leave you iced, style-wise?
